In browsing our social feeds earlier today, I came across an update that was both intriguing and surprisingly telling. Shit! I got 7 minutes to lose 25 pounds. Posted at 11:53pm on the 31st of December.
Although shared for comedic purposes, I found some truth in the statement. How often do we find ourselves setting realistic New Year’s Resolutions only to be filled with disappointment when the clock strikes midnight the following year? For many, establishing these goals has become a trend. Nothing more than a topic of conversation.
Let’s consider, for a moment, that time is a concept we conceived. The first of January represents the American new year. Bali’s new year begins on March 26th and the Bengali new year falls in mid-April. The ancient Babylonian new year lasted for a total of eleven days. Go hard or go home, right? Just touching the tip of iceberg here.
My point is, everyday represents a New Year. Each day begins a rolling twelve month timeframe. Why not treat them as such? As opposed to being disappointed in the extra Zebra Cake you ate at lunch or the cigarette you burned to help ease the stress: realize that tomorrow is a new day. An opportunity for a fresh start and a new beginning.
In fact, fuck waiting. Start that very moment. Put out the cigarette and take in a breath of fresh air. As delicious as the cake might be, save it for another time. Make the choice to conquer the challenge. The greatest freedom we have is the ability to choose how we think and act in the present moment. Here and now.
The past has gone. The future is yet to be determined. Stop planning and learn to take those small actions that add up over time. Accept your failures and move forward. It’s painful, but only temporary.
